The Contemporary Art Museum (also known as CAMICD) in Raleigh, North Carolina, seeks a Museum Director with a passion for contemporary art and design, and a desire to lead this new institution as an energetic cultural center in the Triangle and beyond. The Director is an ambassador for CAMICD to the community and constituencies; has significant connections and experience within the contemporary art world; is articulate about the far-reaching relationships among art, design, technology and the community; and has the vision to help bring regional, national, and international attention to CAMICD.

CAMICD, an initiative of the College of Design at North Carolina State University, is a non-collecting museum with a history of programming and education, which it will move to a permanent building located in Raleigh's emerging Warehouse District. Designed by architects Pugh+Scarpa (Los Angeles) with local partner Clearscapes, the museum facility will be complete in December 2010, and open to the public April 2011 with an inaugural exhibition and related events.

This position is a unique opportunity for an enterprising person with focus and enthusiasm. Working with the Dean of the College of Design, an energetic staff and advisory board, ”who together have ushered CAMICD from its beginnings as a contemporary art gallery, ”the Director will help launch and propel the first museum of its kind in North Carolina.

The successful candidate
  • Is a proven leader, with the ability to collaborate with board members, donors and other community leaders as an advocate for CAMICD;
  • Has a passion for contemporary art and design;
  • Has curatorial experience in contemporary art and/or design;
  • Is a proven fundraiser who inspires donors large and small;
  • Has exceptional communication skills;
  • Is a proven manager, overseeing staff and budgets;
  • Can develop and install a strategic vision for CAMICD that ensures a successful financial and programmatic future.
Requirements
Masters degree, with a minimum of 3 years related museum experience.

Position Overview
The CAMICD Director reports to the Dean of the College of Design at NC State University, works in consultation with the CAMICD Advisory Board, and acts as liaison with the Contemporary Art Foundation (CAF) Board.

As the chief executive of CAMICD, the Director is responsible for:

Exhibitions
Working with the Advisory Board, appropriate board committees, and guest curators to conceive or select exhibitions consistent with CAMICD's mission and budget, storage, handling, and security capabilities; negotiating contracts, producing loan agreements and condition reports, processing insurance requirements, coordinating logistics; securing funding and overseeing marketing and evaluation; supervising exhibition installation.

Programming
Working with the Advisory Board to manage the long-range goals of exhibition-related programs and to secure funding; supervising staff in program planning, development and implementation.

College Relationships
Developing relationships and opportunities for College of Design students, faculty and staff that enhance the educational mission and further enriches the programming of the Contemporary Art Museum.

Finance
Managing financial procedures and internal controls; developing annual budgets; operating the Museum within approved budgets; monitoring monthly budget reports relative to CAF and the College of Design accounts.

Development
Working with the Dean and College Development staff for college related programs in consultation with the CAMICD Advisory Board and CAF to conceptualize development plans; managing development activities including grant writing, corporate giving, annual giving, membership, and special events; preparing quarterly financial reports on development activities.

Marketing
Working with the Advisory Board, development staff and a contracted branding agency to conceptualize, develop and implement on-going marketing plans; managing the funding, content, format, production, dissemination, and evaluation of press releases, exhibition announcements and program invitations.

Public Relations
Representing the Museum to local, regional, national and international audiences in meetings and speaking engagements on behalf of the Museum; developing partnerships with other organizations; advocating for the Museum with community and government leaders, current and prospective donors and members; acting as liaison to CAMICD affiliated groups.

Personnel
Recruiting, hiring, supervising and evaluating the performance of staff and volunteers; recommending to the Advisory Board staff plans, salary levels, benefits, and management policies.

Advisory Board
Providing leadership for the Advisory Board; advising on policies, by-laws, committee structures, and other Board development tasks; assisting the Board with prospect identification and board member recruitment.
