Description: Museum of the Earth (MotE) at the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) seeks an experienced and motivated individual to serve as the head of our Exhibits Department. PRI is located in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. MotE exhibits make accessible the history of life on Earth, the processes by which the Earth system works, and the science by which we understand it.
The ideal candidate will have experience in leading teams, managing projects, and developing natural history and science exhibits. The Director of Exhibits will be responsible for developing and implementing an enhanced strategic vision for exhibits at Museum of the Earth, for overseeing department planning and exhibit-related projects and programs including the future development of the institution’s nascent traveling exhibits program. This position reports to the Associate Director for Outreach and works closely with other institutional personnel, especially outreach, collections, and museum operations staff in a team-centered environment.
Main job responsibilities include:
- leading all aspects of the exhibits program at the Museum of the Earth, including development, fabrication, installation, and maintanance of permanent exhibits, temporary exhibits, traveling exhibits, and local offsite exhibits
- supervising an Exhibits Manager and exhibits volunteers, working closely with other PRI staff, and collaborating with scientists and exhibits staff at other organizations
- budgeting and fundraising for exhibits projects, and scheduling exhibits installations
- overseeing exhibit evaluation
Requirements: Four year college degree; advanced degree strongly preferred, with strong preference for some background in natural sciences and informal education; 5+ years managing individuals, leading teams, and project management; 3+ years of experience designing and fabricating interactive exhibits for museum audiences; excellent written and oral communication skills and excellent organizational skills; flexibility, willingness to learn new things, and openness to receiving feedback; strong customer service orientation and willingness to provide assistance to others. Strong preference for software technology skills, including Adobe products and databases.
PRI is a fast-paced, non-profit; must be able to work on many projects simultaneously. Must work well in both an individual and team setting. Must be able to be lead and participate in each aspect of exhibit development, from conception through design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance. Irregular hours and periodic travel sometimes necessary.
Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Works under the general supervision of the Museum Director.
Responsible for the conceptual development, design, construction, installation, and maintenance of all permanent, temporary, and traveling exhibits for the museum system including in a general history, art, and cultural museum as well as a children’s museum, nature center, living history farm and orchard, and historic houses.
Performs a variety of curatorial museum services in regards to exhibitions including: research, writing, exhibition, and interpretation.
Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.
Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
Responsible for, and must have good working knowledge of, object conservation/preservation techniques in regards to exhibitions (i.e. mount making, conservation materials selection, etc.).
Oversees the development and design of all museum exhibitions with concentrations in Native American culture, early pioneer settlement, trading post era and oil and gas discovery and boom periods.
Researches collections, original source material, and publications to develop and write exhibit labels and other interpretive signage/publicity.
Develops exhibit concepts, context and design as necessary utilizing the most up-to-date technology, materials, and equipment possible including but not limited to: touch screen computer interactives, video/projection, audio repeaters, lighting, etc.
Fabricates or oversees fabrication work with outside designers, as assigned to insure quality exhibitions; coordinates with other city entities including: building & maintenance, purchasing, parks and recreation, for fabrication, transportation, exhibit installation assistance, etc.
Leads exhibit committee(s) composed of staff, foundation members, visitors and citizens to develop long-range planning for exhibits, content and concepts for the museum system.
Works with Museum Director to establish exhibit schedule, direction, and priorities including in-house, traveling, permanent and temporary exhibits.
Assists with and designs all visual aspects in the museum system including but not limited to: exhibits, brochures, catalogues, riverrine interpretive signage, directional/informational signage, store merchandise, displays, marketing/advertising displays, visitor information booth, etc.
Assists in the training of staff and volunteers working in exhibit areas and in the museum production/graphics shop.
Maintains a complete inventory of all division tools, exhibits, supplies, and equipment; oversees exhibit shop and maintains exhibit casework and furniture.
Serves as part of the Museum System upper management staff and may be called upon to oversee other Museum System functions.
Works as an administrative staff member to assist with various museum/city wide special events such as Riverfest, Freedom Days, Totah Festival, etc.
Assists with the development of grant proposals and other revenue generating projects.
Assists in all areas of museum operations at any of the museum facilities and in outside special events, openings, programs, and receptions, etc.
In the absence of the Museum Director, will serve as Acting Director.
Responsible for day-to-day curatorial operations in regard to exhibits.
Responsible for maintaining exhibits budget and communicates with purchasing staff in obtaining quotes and/or bids for materials and services needed to complete assigned projects.
Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
May serve on various employee committees, as required and assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing.
Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record for the past three years or state of current residency.
Masters Degree in Museum Studies, History, American Studies, Material Culture or a related field and two years experience in a History related museum; or Bachelor's degree with five years experience in a History related museum.
Extensive knowledge of museum exhibition practices required in regard to drafting practices, project management skills, and exhibit fabrication standards and resources. Ability to identify and resolve mechanical, electrical, structural, and plumbing problems either on their own or in coordination with the city’s building and maintenance department. Must possess an understanding of the application of the American’s with Disabilities Act toward exhibit design and development. Ability to transfer ideas/concepts into blueprints, conceptual drawings, mock ups, and models.
Extensive research experience required.
Knowledge of exhibit design/development and interpretive technologies preferred.
History experience required; Natural History, Art and Science experience preferred, but not required.
Knowledge and experience in Living History preferred.
Considerable knowledge of professional museum principles and practices.
Knowledge of Embark collections database systems preferred.
Working knowledge of equipment and facilities required in a comprehensive museum setting.
Experience in grant research and writing preferred.
Must be flexible, innovative, self motivated and have the ability to work independently.
Working knowledge of the principles and practices of office management, work organization and supervision.
Ability to supervise, train, motivate, and direct museum staff.
Must have excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills.
Must be service oriented and have the ability to organize and meet deadlines.
Must have the ability to interact effectively with all age levels and cultural backgrounds.
Bilingual skills helpful but not required.
Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.

Exhibitions and Program Production Manager

PURPOSE: Under the supervision of the Director of Visitor Events & Programs and in close collaboration with the Vice President of Visitor Experience & Business Development and the Vice President of Facilities & Planning, the Exhibitions & Program Production Manager is an integral part of all fairs, festivals, flower shows, exhibitions and special events taking place in the Regenstein Center and other areas of the Garden. Works with design and program staff, and may sometimes be engaged in direct production activities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for maintaining and executing the day-by-day calendar of production-related activities associated with programs in and adjacent to the Regenstein Center.
- Responsible for routine aesthetic inspections of the Regenstein Center and follow up actions as necessary.
- Manage the indoor exhibition program:
- Includes In Search of Paradise photomural exhibits and potential temporary exhibitions for CBG to host.
- Develop concepts and contacts for annual temporary exhibition schedule for the Joutras Gallery. Serve as lead exhibition developer for approved annual schedule and manage details for layout, installation, maintenance and strike of each exhibition.
- Serve as the point person for all exhibition concept submissions. Responsible for reviewing and responding to all inquires.
- Schedule year-round display of permanent photomural exhibition, In Search of Paradise. Ensure photomural repairs are made as needed in the Regenstein Center and Visitor Center areas. Works closely with programmers to schedule the arrival and departure exhibition/program components. Responsible for load-in and load-out of all components. Synchronizes staffing plans for incoming and outgoing shipping.
- Works with Vice President of Visitor Experience & Business Development to develop the CBG traveling temporary exhibition program as a revenue source for the Garden.
- Manage the Garden’s traveling exhibition program:
- Enhance revenue opportunities by promoting and booking existing Garden-owned traveling exhibitions.
- Develop marketing materials and exhibition manuals.
- Serve as primary point person for booked venues; plan exhibition logistics, installation, maintenance and strike.
- Work with Vice President of Visitor Experience & Business Development to develop contracts for exhibition rentals.
- Works closely with venues to schedule the arrival and departure exhibition/program components. Responsible for load-in and load-out of all components. Synchronizes staffing plans for incoming and outgoing shipping.
- Work with Vice President of Facilities & Planning to develop, maintain, and monitor the interactive exhibition parts in the Rice Plant Science Center.
- Produces estimates of materials and labor for exhibitions/events/programs assigned and various tasks needing to be done.
- Schedules the work and tasks for projects assigned.
- Manages groups of preparators, as needed; may select, hire, and manage outside contractors for various tasks where appropriate.
- Works with designers and programmers to implement and realize exhibition goals. Establishes milestones for deliverables due.
- Suggests and/or provides reasonable design solutions, in collaboration with design group, that are cost effective.
- Participates in assigning staff to project tasks, setting up crews, designating crew leaders and making other job assignments relative to the project.
- Interfaces with various departments (i.e., grounds, visitor operations, housekeeping, security, construction & maintenance, private & corporate events, Fruit & Vegetable Garden programs) to expedite program production.
- Ensures program opening and closing deadlines are met.
- Develops or helps to develop shop drawings and/or details of exhibition elements.
- Oversees workspace set-up and related health and safety issues.
- Participates in long- and short-range department planning and policy.
- Works to assure conservation issues are met in the exhibition being produced. Works to assure proper handling of exhibition materials.
- Interfaces with visiting workers/curators from other institutions.
- Performs other appropriate duties as assigned.
- Must work at least one weekend day as part of regular work schedule.
